Dharma Grace Creative Writing Award

About the Award

Established in 2005, the Dharma-Grace Foundation Creative Writing Award Fund, an endowed fund, provides an annual award for an outstanding script, written by a junior or senior undergraduate student (from any discipline) who is in good academic standing. The award is designated to provide funding for a full production of the script.

Eligible candidates for the award are selected by a faculty committee of the Department of Performance, Play & Design and recommended to the Dean of the Division of Arts for final approval.


Eligibility Guidelines

  • Must be a registered student at University of California, at Santa Cruz, junior or senior in good academic standing.
  • Plays must not have had a professional production.

Submission Guidelines

Submissions will be accepted through a form linked to here at the beginning of each submission cycle. Check back her for information about submitting a dramatic work for a future award cycle.

Materials to include:

  • Script in PDF format following the guidelines below.
  • 500 word Creative Goals Statement.
  • 1-3 sentence synopsis.

Guidelines to follow:

  • Experimental work encouraged.
  • Works must be full-length, original plays (including musicals).
  • Script must include: cast list, brief character descriptions, and ideas for set requirements.
  • Minimum 65 pages, maximum 120 pages using 12pt Times
  • Use New Roman font or equivalent.
  • Use standard play format and follow script formatting guidelines – please email Professor Rollins for format example: lirollin@ucsc.edu
  • No translations/adaptions.
  • Must be written primarily in English.
  • Only one submission is allowed per playwright, per cycle.
